Fun at the Disco!

On Thursday the 12th of September the middles and senior children of St Clair school
had a night time disco in the hall as a fund raiser.
The main highlights of the disco for me were the spectacular coloured and flashing lights. The kids looked amazing with the glow sticks illuminating their faces.

It was great to see people up on the stage dancing that usually wouldn’t
go on stage, people were having a really good time and there was lots of laughter. It
was great to hang out with my friends and they were really funny.
Despite having a good time there are some things I would like to see changed.
I would hope for a better mix of the songs next time and more variety in the
foods to purchase. It would be great to have a seniors only disco because the
middles get a little bit silly.

CHECK OUT THE THOUGHTS BELOW OF SOME PEOPLE THAT WENT TO THE DISCO.

Stars on Stage - By Jordan and Sylvia

Thanks so much to Ruth for the photos.

“Stars On Stage was remarkable getting done up with make up. It was the most amusement I have ever had in a long time, and I hope I get to do it again next year.” - Anika

It is exciting entering the dressing room when suddenly my tummy rumbles, am I hungry? Did I catch Samuel’s tummy bug? Tip toeing on stage I stop and realise I am nervous and I have butterflies in my tummy. - Kayla

As I tiptoe slowly to my position ready to start. Here it comes the curtains are going up. Everyone is as still as a statue! There it is the music is on, as Mrs Stevenson is watching saying, “strong, strong, strong!” The music is not stopping it’s constantly going on and on. Suddenly group C is on…- Brooklyn

On the 4th of September I went to Stars on Stage 2013. At the start I was really nervous to go on stage but once I got on I wasn’t so nervous at all. I just did big moves and did it with a big smile. Once we got off the stage we put on our jackets and went outside in the cold rainy night.I had to wait for ten minutes till my mum got out of theatre and I was feeling happy but cold. - Charlize

With my skirt flowing gracefully behind me, the crowds clapping fills my ears. The music doesn’t seem to stop, then my chance to shine. The spotlight upon me in the dark, feeling nervous I start to dance but it draws to an end so quickly. I will never forget it, never! - Jemma

As the lights turned on I was scared out of my mind. I didn't know what was going to happen. I was in the corner watching the school before us on the tv. When the host finally called our school out I knew I had to do it. I walked out onto the stage and recited the story of our show. I was so nervous even after I did the speech but overall it was an incredible night. -Ben

Behind the pitch black curtain everyone was running around getting into their places. My tummy was doing somersaults. Suddenly the curtain flew up and then light started shining in my eyes.. -Amaya

While sitting in my red chair I was blown away by the other schools performances. Finally time for St Clair School to perform. We nervously walked to the dressing rooms. After just about choking on the smell of hairspray, we gathered our props and put them on the stage. The music started we all froze… Samantha

I froze as soon as the curtains slowly crept up. The roar of the crowd was terrifying. The first song was on once it was finished it felt like five seconds and it was done… Tevya

Worm Farm. By Thomas and Harrison

A worm farm is where you can put your organic waste where worms turn it into nitrogen. We find their excretion very useful to help our plants grow. At St Clair School we have a worm farm to help reduce our waste.

This is the steps that we take to care for our worm farm.

What to Feed Your Worms:
Banana peels
Paper
Apple cores
Leaves and Vegetable Scraps.

What Not to Feed Worms:
Coloured paper
Junk food/acidic and spicy foods
Orange skins

Step 1:
Collect food scraps from children's lunches and then empty the food scraps into the worm farm.

Step 2:
Leave a bucket under the hole in the worm farm where the juice passes through the soil and trickles into the bucket.

Step 3:
When there is enough juice we pour it into a recycled milk container, give it a good shake and give it away to people in our community.

That's our steps of how to use the worm farm, now you can have your own one so remember to do it every day and feed your worms the right stuff!

Teamwork + KCM = Class Party!

Our Shared Lunch
By Anika Ayson

On the last day of school for the term, we had finally earned 400 points. In return our teacher let us have a shared lunch plus some party games! How exciting if you had a party in your classroom during school time! Firstly we had some party games before we had lunch, like wink murderer, musical chairs and a couple other cool games. It was time for lunch! “YUM” everyone whispered, while Ms Kerr spreads the DELICIOUS savouries and sweets across the table. We all go round the table stuffing our plates with food!  We finish up and go outside with a full belly. The foods not finished so we go around in the playground asking anybody if they want some party food. I think everybody enjoyed the food!

Cross Country

On the 5th of June it was cross country. After morning tea all the seniors lined up on their class number on the court ready to go to Kettle Park. We walked out the back gate and past the Forbury race-track. Once we got there year 5 and 6 boys lined up for the race. Three, two, one, GO!

The boys raced around the track, they did two big laps and George came first. Then the girls lined up ready to race, they did two big laps and Amaya came first. We were all very puffed.

Amaya is in Room 15 so we decided to interview her. Here is what Amaya thought of the Cross Country…

Extra! Extra! Read All About It!

Room 15 is full of amazing authors and recently some of them have featured in the Extra. Extra is an educational resource published by the Otago Daily Times and showcases current events as well as children's writing. Here are some of our published authors:

"Seeing my story in the Extra was really exciting knowing that it will be read all around New Zealand. My story was called: Billy’s adventure, I had sent it to the extra in March and they put it in for the June extra! I was also hoping they would put it in! First I had to write it, then I self edited by doing, COPS, highlighting my goals were I have done them. Next I added some things in.Then it was time for peer editing! I got my peer (Anika) and she read it and left 2 stars and a wish! When Ms Kerr called out “Jemmas story is in the extra” I came up and saw it in there. I was so proud of myself for achieving my goal, but I’m not stopping there!" Jemma.

"Previously in the last two months I made it into the Extra. My piece was a book review on Gangster Granny. When I saw it in the Extra I was stunned, I felt so proud of myself.
P.S. If you don't know what Extra is it is a kids news paper." Jordan.

"Last month I wrote a poem about figurative language. I sent my poem into the Extra and I was hoping I would get in. When the new Extra arrived I flicked through the poem section to find my poem. I felt amazed and proud of myself." Tiara.

"I've been trying to send a story into the Extra for a while. When I was finished typing my story I gave it to Ms Kerr to send. When the Extra came out I found my story, I was so excited!" Emily DL

"I wrote a recipe about chocolate mousse. When I sent it to the Extra I was really nervous and thought I wouldn't get in. But, when I saw it in the Extra my teacher Ms Kerr said that I won a recipe book. I was really happy that I got in and won something." Amaya.

MY HEART WAS POUNDING - By Brylie

This story is the sole work of Brylie, Room15.

My heart was pounding in my ears I was gasping for breath then suddenly splash I had fallen in to a pond. Then all my boot camp friends ran back to me they said who’s lunch now. What do you mean help me out but they just stood there and read the sign. Muddy pond you will get wet stuck and you will become lunch for the ells it was to late I was out.  Claudia my boss ran to her car and drove it to the pond the girls lifted me in to the car and Claudia drove me to the hospital. The doctor told me that I would have to get an operation then he left the room. Claudia said I better tell the girls what’s happening. So she left. Then a handsome prince walked in. Need a hand with that ell no. I nearly fainted. He ripped the ell of my leg and then he kissed me I did not fell a thing and when he stood back I looked at my leg and it looked like nothing had happened. I stood up and thanked him and we walked out and lived happily ever after.

TOM CAT FINDS A NEW HOME - By Samantha

This is the sole work of Samantha, Room 15.

A big, fat round cat walked silently through his cat flap. This cat was so fat he looked just like a grey, black and white stripy ball. He walked across the road to a tall, old, wooden fence painted yellow, he squeezed through a broken piece of wood. The rather small fat boy Harry, He was wearing his dirty orange t-shirt with black shorts that went down to his knees and his old muddy sneakers. He stood out side aiming to kick the football. Tom cat knew that Harry was a great football kicker. Harry had hit the football so hard it had gone round the side of their new house. The house was decorated with blue and white paint. Harry raced round the side. Tom cat followed along just about touching Harry’s heels. Harry had found his ball and quickly turned and kicked it back. ”BANG”. The ball hit tom cat and made him go flying into the air. “THUMP”
He landed face first in the mud puddle. Tom cat strolled away meowing “I hate my neighbourhood.”

He began leading himself across the road avoiding traffic. Tom cat scratched at the door then walked once again silently walked through the cat flap. Something felt different he just didn’t understand nothing ever felt different before. Tom cat sat down and thought for a moment. “Ah-ha “ meowed Tom cat. He saw a small brown thing out of the corner of his eye. It was the grossest thing in the world of cats. It was a puppy! The puppy came running towards him. The beastly creature slid out his long, pink and licked right up the side of Tom cats face. Tom cat ran out the room and through the cat flap, he ran through the towns across the city in the buildings and over the hills. He ran as fast as he could into an old woman’s house. “I am lost and scared what to do, what to do? Meowed Tom cat. “Maybe I can just stay here for a few days. He slept under an old wooden bed, the wall was surrounded by pictures of puppies those small, beastly creatures. But soon enough he set out into the big dangerous world again and found his favourite family and his favourite cat flap. Finally he settled back in and quickly that was because they had got rid of that mean creature, the puppy!

GOING TO ENGLAND - By Thomas

This is the sole work of Thomas from Room 15.

Just half an hour away from landing we were all so excited. When we were coming down we were looking over the whole of London, the m25 motorway, and the place where they did the Olympic rowing. We got some English sweets before landing. Yey we have landed at Heathrow airport.

We were waiting ages to get off this plane, finally we got off and got our bags, and dad and Adam were so happy to be back they even kissed the ground. The taxi driver was holding dads name on a big bit of cardboard, that’s our cab dad ‘I said’ we got down to the taxi and put our heavy suit cases in the back. Adam just dozed off cause he was so tired. When we turned down nanas road I was so excited. We pulled up and nana came rushing out, grandad and Paul took our bags in I said hello to Jordan. I couldn’t believe I was actually taller than auntie Claire and nana.

We were going to leave for our hotel in Essex we went past a premier inn hotel and we all thought that looked like a prison we thought our hotel that we were going to stay in was really good but when we got there nana just wanted t get our bags and rush in. but dad said lets have a look first, we went in and the lights were turned off and no one was in the keys were left on the bench for us to let ourselves in we went to our room and the bed smelt like pee.

So back to the premier inn what we all thought was a prison. But after all I wasn’t so bad, it was quite cool, we could have breakfast and dinner. We went up to our room and put our bags in. we went down to the bar to get a drink and some dinner.

In the morning we had to get ready for the wedding, when we left the hotel we got to the place where the wedding was. We saw lots of people and family we haven’t seen in such a long time. Finally I got to go to sleep at two o clock in the morning.

DQ'd in Invercargill - By Jack.

This is the sole work of Jack, Room 15.
In Invercargill I was racing go karts. It was fun. The night before the race I had Burger King for tea and after tea Grandad and me went bowling. After bowling we went back to the hotel then we went to bed. In the morning it was freezing cold. We went to the track and we were the first ones there and we didn't have a key so we went to the beach and did donuts! We went back to the track and drove through the gate =`then`- we parked the car. We got the kart out of the car. We went through srutineering and went to drivers' briefing. We put my kart on the grid and Grandad started it for me. I was in second and my motor got checked for cheating and I got disqualified because I had too much carbon on my piston.

HOW MANY?

As part of mathematics we have been looking at how many days are in each month. It's a tricky thing to remember so here is a video that teaches us a wee trick:

We also have been learning about how many seconds in a minute, minutes in an hour and hours in a day. These are things we just need to remember. Here is a song to help us:

SNOW DAY

Yesterday school was closed because of snow. Today we read the description A WINTER SCENE BY LEO about a, 'Winter Scene'. It inspired the writing below. Some of them are only the beginning of a story some children plan on finishing.

I look outside to see glistening white powder covering everything it connects the road to the path and blends the houses into the icy landscape around them. I am overflowing with excitement I start wrapping in warm bundles of wool hats and waterproof jackets.
Next thing I knew snowballs came plummeting down like missiles in war. Splat! splat! They hit the trampoline hard. 10 minutes later the war was over and we went inside to warm up.
BY DANIEL

I stepped outside into the cold, harsh world it felt great, it also felt really cold considering I was in shorts and a tshirt. Once I got a jacket on I sprinted to the gate when I realised it was piled with snow. I got the shovel and shoveled it all, it took at least 1000 years to do. When that was out of the way I stepped and snow was everywhere. My dad dared me to eat yellow snow so... crunch! crunch! crunch! it tasted terrible but it was one of the highlights of the day.
BY BEN

It was Tuesday the 27th, the freezing air hit me like a rocket. My dad walks in, "you're late for school, it's 8:53!" He said. I looked at him warily.
"Prove it!" I shouted angrily at him. He showed me his phone, 8:53! Ahhh, I was hesitated. I opened the curtains, no sun peaking from behind the clouds. Nothing but a cold wind and a white sheet blanket. "YAY!" I screamed at the top of my lungs. Jumping on my bed doing a little dance of joy. Running to the kitchen, it hit me.
FRENCH TOAST! I just woke up and already the best snow day ever! I stayed in my PJs because they were as warm as a toaster. What's that noise? Growing heavier and heavier the hail filled up to a milimetre.
WOW! I was stunned. The glistening crystals shimmered making me eager to build a snowman (or lady). I ran outside. Snowflakes crunching under my feet.
Tomorrow it'll be sunny. I cry. I don't want it to end, not today, not ever!"

White pretty little snowflakes falling on my nose, making my nose tingle.
Snow hail falling on my roof as hard like a gray round rock.
The road is very treacherous for cars to drive on them slippery, sliding, icy snow.
Chicken noodle soup, cooking in a pot steaming up the windows smelling very nice.
People riding on sleds down the hill.
My family all wrapped up as snug as a bug with gloves, hats and scarves and layers. I feel like a furry cat.
BY EMILY K

Once on a frozen, icy morning everyone was building big large snowmen. The snow tasted like dog pee. Luckily there was some delicious blazing hot soup waiting inside. There were some awesome ice-skaters doing some amazing moves. Screaming kids yelling "nananana" you can't get me!" while playing snowball wars. BY DEANNA

"Mmm, what's that smell?" I asked my mum. I looked in the kitchen. "Yum, hot chocolate." I said/
"You don't have school today." My mum said to me.
I looked out the window and said, "YAY! Snow!" BY SHANAYE

As the snow glistens across Dunedin, Otago the children are happily playing in the snow. While their parents are tucked in bed listening to the list of cancelations for schools on the radio. As they hear their school getting called out from the radio they quickly yell out of the room, "Schools closed! Horray!" scream the children in happiness. My mum says quietly...
"What am I going to do with you two?"
BY MACKENZIE

On a wet, cold, snowy day my brother is like, "get dressed there's snow!". So I did. When I first stepped out the door I felt myself shivering like I have been out there for ages. I keep walking until I reach the grass. I touch the snow it was so COLD, "help my hand is stuck!"
"Don't worry I got out it out" I said. I ran to the backyard and wow it was deep, it was about 20cm long. I live on a hill that's why it is so deep. I got my boggy board out and got on the road and it went...
BY BROOKLYN

Patter, patter. I hear on the roof. Patter, patter, patter, "What's that sound?" I say. Looking outside I see snow falling. Zane playing with his wrestlers and ad sitting down. I take a seat near the heater which is bursting with heat, I feel better now dad tells me there is no school and I can hop  back in bed. I choose not to. I run out and begin playing in the snow, "Zane and Maia come outside!" They came but didn't know I was standing there ready with two snowballs in my hand. I aimed and BANG! Straight in the head...
"Waaaa waaaaa!" Zane cried.
BY PAYGE

Running down the footpath with snow in my hands I feel like I'm in the Pacific Ocean. Soon a kid comes racing on a sled down the hillside, he shouts, "FIRE!"
I screamed, "Don't you dare!" but he wasn't going for me he was going for the adults. I sighed with relief.

On Tuesday it was a snowy day and watching the snow dropping down from the grey skies with me tucked in the warm blankets watching my sister play with her green dress twirling like a frog doing ballet...

On Tuesday we went to our farm to see the snow. We made a snow man. Dad drove over it and a cow hit the snowman. So we made another snowman and then we had a snowball fight.
BY JUDD

...I went out the gate and there were about 10 kids it was a battle ground! There were commets of snow flying everywhere, I could feel the snow under my hard boots...
BY HENRY

Have you ever been in a position where this gigantic snow ball is pounding towards you?
Well I have. Yesterday afternoon I got into a furious snowball fight with my older sister, Shani. As I flew back onto the freezing cold snow. As it starts to sprinkle snow all over me. I'm very angry at Shani. It hit me like a bulldozer knocking down the sky tower. Next time it snows I have a tremendous plan.
BY ANIKA

I feel like an ice-berg
I look like a big bear
I hear the cold wind
I see the snowflakes
I sit by the warm fire
I drink hot soup
I make a giant snowman
I rug up nice and snug.

The blankets pulled over my head. Brr brr, I say in my head. "Emily! Emily! Come and see the snow!"
"It's snowing, it's snowing!" I say to my mum.

Snow slips down the dusty chimney.
I got Diesel and Mum.
Mum got the Ipad and I had a snowball fight!  picked up some snow and made it nice and round like an apple...
BY JACKSON

The wet icy snowball hits my face, it tastes like sa snow cone without any flavour. "Got ya" My dad said.
"You'll be sorry!" I shouted.
Smash, Smash... I ran up to him and plummeted a humungous snowball in his face, "don't mess with me," I said
"Give me your worst" he said.
"OK, I'll give you my worst." I said. I went up to the back and got a really, really really, really big snowball. It was so big I had to roll it over there at the end I couldn't throw it at him. It was too heavy. I could smell the cold air...what a great day!
BY SAMUEL

I hear the wind like a hurricane around the house. Hail smashes against the walls. I left a trail of footprints in the snow. Crunch, crunch as I lead on. Snowballs hitting me from different directions, down I go. I try to get up but all the weight from the snow held me down...
BY BRYLIE

One Tuesday morning I jumped out of bed, put my dressing gown on and my ug boots and sprinted down the hallway. I screamed with happiness. All I could see was white glistening snow all over my backyard. I ran back to my room and quickly put some really warm clothes on. I ran back down the hallway and opened the door. I felt the chilly air hit my face.
AMAYA

Yesterday morning I was fast asleep until twelve o'clock, I looked at the clock then I looked at it again. GEE! I thought, twleve o'clock... how come I'm not at school? My mum said it snowed last night. I rushed outside, in the snow I could feel ice crystals in my hands and smell fire from the chimney. I could see snow falling all around then I had a snowball fight with Lucy and Millie my next door neighbours.

On a wet cold snowy day I was watching the freezing snow dripping down like cold water. I feel the cold wind coming through the window as I climb out of my bed.

The icy slushy snow hits my body like a bolder. I am getting bashed by the crunchy snowballs as I bolt down the hill on the tobogen. The fresh snow fills my nose causing it to freeze. I taste the scrumptious soon as I munch away.
I hear the wind wailing as the snow mixes the sky.
I do love a squishy snow day.

The snow is dancing like little ballet dances. My teeth chatter as the cold wind winds through my teeth. My wet pants grip with cold snow and ice. My feet slide across the ice, my lips go purple like purple goo...
BY SYMONE

The shimmering snow covers my eyes, as I face at the sun trying to peek through the dark clouds. The snow in my hair as the wind picks up the breeze. It smells as pure as fresh hot soup. The wind swoops down and numbs my ears clean off. As I make the shape of a snowball my fingers fall off because of the icy cold snow. I look behind myself and I see lots of foot prints as fas as the eye can see. A hot warm sensation dripping down my throat. I am looking at the fluffy snow I just payed in.
BY TEVYA

Splat!Splat! I throw a snowball at my brother trying to hit him hard in the head. the sound of the snow crashing onto the ground as the children scream running away from the incoming snowballs. They leave a footprint in the snow that crushes the snow. I feel the anger growing inside me, I am a ticking time bomb waiting for the perfect time to invade Luke's base. I see the snow scattered like a carpet across the land. I trudge through the freezing snow as I grab a whole lot of snowballs to missile at Luke. I run to Luke throwing snowballs at him like a maniac. I made it past him and sprinted down the concrete stairs with snowflakes falling on to my tongue. I kicked off my gumboots and burst through the door. I smelt a burning wood on the fire and ran to my milo waiting on the table with steam flowing out. I took a sip, it was hot and just how I liked it.
I really enjoy snow days.
BY SYLVIA

Mum comes into my room, I am fadely awake, I thought she was going to wake me up. I just wanted to stay in bed and snuggle up in the covers. But then it didn't turn out how I though it would.
She said that schools cancelled today because it was snowing. I thought she was trying to be funny. I looked at my watch and it was 9am, so she wasn't jo;king. I got up and started playing Minecraft. Eventually I got a  bored of that so I went outside. Bedofre I did that I couldn't just out in my pyjamas, I went and just put some warm clothes on.
I started chucking snowballs at mums car. Mum said she'd go out and get some KFC. When she got back she came back with nice hot KFC. The chicked was as huge as a massive rock. i was so soft in my mouth. The best snow day of my life.

MATHS TARGET PRACTICE

As mentioned in the homework note last week here is a collection of online/printable activities which could help you master your knowledge targets.

On Wednesday I will add the 6.2 practice activities.

STAGE 5 PRACTICE

STAGE 6.1 PRACTICE

TAKEN 3 - By Daniel Hughes

This story is the sole work of Daniel Hughes, room 15.
Starring Hobo Joe, Steve, Rat King, and maybe Liam Neeson

TAKEN 3

Warning this may not be as exciting as you thought it might be.
Somewhere in a junkyard a dirty, stinky junkyard there lived a stinky but cheerful man called Hobo Joe he had a dog called Steve, he was friendly and had scruffy grey fur and always loves to lye on Joe’s bed. They lived in a nice trash house mostly made of rusty car parts and rubbish bins.

Now in the middle of the junkyard there is a tunnel beside it is a fifty metre deep slope and a giant vertical version of a flame-thrower that is used to destroy trash when the junkyard is full. Okay, now down the tunnel it’s really long and for a while it’s darkness then there is a humongous kingdom full of evil rats which are loyal to their also evil Rat King.

One day Hobo Joe woke up and Steve wasn’t on his bed. “Weird,” he said to himself. He looked around, his house was messier than three whole dumps put together which wasn’t normal, some thing caught his eye there was a scratch mark on the door that read, ‘help!’

He knew straight away that the rats had taken Steve for food, he grabbed a flashlight turned it on and sprinted towards the tunnel and dived down which caused him to slide. He was sliding for quite a while then he saw a light, he was going really fast now. There were bone like bars at the end of the tunnel, “what is that? Oh it’s a cage,” he muttered. “Wait I can see Steve!”

Bang Hobo Joe smashed through the cage bars, and grabbed Steve. He was going so fast he was flying over the kingdom. “Steve I’m flying.” Joe said gleefully, Steve was ignoring his not so funny joke. They went up a tunnel on the other side and landed perfectly. Someone came up behind them, “hi,” he said. “I’m Liam Neeson, I’m here for the movie.”
“Oh.” Said Steve, “you missed it.”
“You can talk?” Asked Hobo Joe.

My Dad's Birthday - By Brooklyn

This story is the sole work of Brooklyn, Room 15.

My Dad’s Birthday.

On May the 3rd it was my dad’s birthday. Me my brother Caiden and my mum and my dad we all went to the Lone Star for lunch. The day before his birthday, he booked in for a table and the time which was 1.30. When it reached his birthday I was so excited I had breakfast and then my mum came home from work at lunch time.

So we had a little play until it was time to go to the Lone Star. We went in the car and drove there bump, bump, bump goes the car on the bumpy road finally we got there “yah, but its so cold” I said. We went to the counter and my dad said “hi I booked in for a table yesterday” and the lady Sarah said “yes your table is over by the window” so we went and sat down and waited for the lady too come around and take our orders.

I got some chips with some deputy dog’s which are hot dogs but that’s just what they have called it and Caiden got the same as me, My mum got a very small Mexican pizza but my dad got some steak and rice.
When we all finished our lunch meal the lady came around said “ would you like some dessert now?” and we said “yes please” My dad got a cake because it is his birthday “yum, yum” he said with a smile.
We finished our food and we went to the counter to pay and we got a surprise cause the food cost more then 100 d it cost $108 and we didn’t have the extra $8 and we looked in our wallets and we still couldn’t find spare money.
So the lady said we don’t have too pay the extra 8 dollars we were saved that day, what a great day that was.

CHINA TRIP - By Jordan Green

On Saturday the 7th of October 2006; Me, Mum and Dad headed to Christchurch airport around 6am. We left Christchurch airport at 7am and flew to Sydney. I found a friend to play with on the 10-hour flight from Sydney to Shanghai.

Sunday the 8th of October, our first day in Shanghai. First we went to a restaurant. I enjoyed eating steamed pork buns with chopsticks.

Sunday night; We took the over night train from Shanghai to Beijing which took 12-hours. This cabin slept 4 people.
Monday 9th of October; We got dropped off at Beijing train station. I missed playing with other children. So I found a friend to play badminton with out side our hotel.

Tuesday the 10th of October; “Time to climb the Great Wall of China but before that we can feed the black bears,” said mum. “Yeah!” I said. When we got there I saw both of the black bears standing on the fence. They had a soft back furry fur with a brown nose. You got to throw apples at them to feed them. This was my favourit part. “Time to climb said mum!” I sighed. I managed to climb up some of the way but mum and dad carried me some of the way too.

Wednesday 11th of October. We hired out some bikes out and cycled around Beijing. It was hot 30 degrees! It was fun! Next we went to the Beijing Zoo. The White Tigers made a deep growling noise as they waited for their food. The elephants were playing with each other. The pandas were sitting on their bottoms eating bamboo.

Thursday 12th October. We arrived in Shanghai at 7am Thursday morning on the over night train. We watched this man and his monkeys performing on the street in Shanghai.

Friday 13th October. We caught a bus to Shanghai city. I found another friend. Then we went to a restaurant.

Saturday 14th October. Judd and Cathy’s wedding day. We are on our way to the wedding. I enjoyed sitting in a tree.

Sunday 15th October. We took a train called the Maglev from pudding airport to the terminal. It travels at 431 km\hr. We left Shanghai at 7pm Sunday night. We stopped in Melbourne briefly then flew to Christchurch arriving at 2am Thursday

Monday 16th of October. I slept most of the way.

I thought it was really fun.

This published version is the sole work of Brylie Room 15.

Raining and cold I was wondering what it would be like in Australia. We arrived at the airport.

Nice and sunny it was so hot I stripped down into a singlet and shorts. Standing still I had ants crawling up my legs. As we walked over to Nana’s car I could see a whole heap of black things crawling over the car.
As I got closer I realised that they were ants.

There must have been over one thousand of them! I asked Nana how they got there. She said they were on her car yesterday morning. She also said she thinks it was from where she parked her car at the hotel.

By the end of the week we had killed them with fly spray.

 Bye bye Australia

DESSERT TONIGHT?

CHOCOLATE MOUSSE
Recipe supplied by Amaya Leslie
St Clair School Dunedin.

 INGREDIENTS
>1 ¾ cups of dark chocolate
>4 eggs separated
>White chocolate shavings if you want
SERVES: 4 people
PREP TIME: 1 hour 15 minutes.
METHOD
> Place the chocolate in a heatproof bowl, over a pan of blazing water on a low to medium heat, stirring while it’s melting. Once it’s smooth and runny, remove from the heat and allow it to cool slightly.
>While you are waiting beat the egg yolks. In a different bowl, whisk the egg whites in till they are as fluffy as clouds. Try turning the bowl with egg whites in it, and if it doesn’t drip that means its ready.
>When you’re ready pour the mixture into four individual glasses and put then in the fridge to set for one hour. You can decorate them with shavings of white chocolate.
 ENJOY!!!!!

KEEPING UP WITH THE NEWS

Ms Kerr stumbled across this awesome site to keep us updated with the news. Each article is written with children as the audience. There are even questions after the article to get us thinking. There are letters to the editor and a chance for us to send our own writing away.

We can't wait to start exploring this in reading (it could be part of our reading each night) and using it as an audience for our writing.

FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE SONG

Room 15 have been learning about Figurative Language. As part of this we have been learning a song that we intend to perform in our Senior Assembly next week. It has some tricky tongue twisters and parts we need to practice.

Here is the song so the Room 15 children can practice at home and other children can learn about Figurative Language.

WELCOME BACK!

Hey Room 15 children, families and our Quadbloggers,

We have just returned back from holidays and are ready for a term of exciting learning. There's lots going on this term including; Stars on Stage, Kapa Haka, a few lunchtime clubs, Senior Team workshops and many more awesome activities.

In Room 15 we have been trying out a new way of storing our goals. Our current reading, writing and mathematics goals are located in an envelope, paper-clipped to each of our books. When we master a goal it is posted into our, "goal bank". This means we can see all the goals we have achieved  throughout the term, we can also go back to practice a goal we feel we need practice again. In class we have a literacy, language and numeracy goal that we practice as a whole class, these are displayed in the classroom.

*At home you could challenge your child to remember and share their current learning goals with you in reading, writing and mathematics...

*I challenge each child to write their goals in each area as a comment on this post. I wonder if you can give me a sentence or two describing what each one you can remember means?

--> I wonder if children from other classes and our quadbloggers could share their goals learning goals with us too...

-->Adults, do you have any personal goals at the moment you would like to share with us?

OUR MUSEUM TRIP

On Thursday the 4th of April Room 15 went to the Early Setters Museum. When we arrived at the museum our instructor greeted us. She had black hair with glasses and her name was Sara.

First Sara told us what to touch and what not to touch. Then we went to the old bus stop to have morning tea. After morning tea we got into small groups to build a domino track. We had 30 minutes to do it. The idea behind this was to get us working in teams and ready to concentrate.

After we went to the classroom Sara asked us to describe what we think when we hear the word technology. Emily K said, “when I think of technology I think of things that aren’t just electrical.”
Daniel said, “when I think of technology I think of man-made things.”  Through sharing our ideas we got to hear what everybody thought technology was.

Next we went to see the display of technology that has been used in the past. Some items we saw were; old vacuum-cleaners, old washing machines, old microwave ovens and an old dish washer.  When we saw these things we thought they were very interesting because they are different to the ones we have now.

After that we got in to groups and Sara gave us a mystery object. They were all technological objects from the past.  We got a whole list of questions to get us thinking and working out what the object might have been. Groups had items like: an iron, butter press, old washing machine, water pump, sock darner and a 3D viewer. Some groups worked out what the objects were but others needed to be told. It was funny listening to what people thought some of the items were.

It was now time for lunch. Munching away, kids planned out a domino track to build at lunchtime.  Lunch boxes were put away and children were quiet to let other kids finish their dominoes.

After lunch each group chose an item that has changed over time and was in the museum. Each person in the group got a sheet and had to find examples in the museum of the evolution of their item. We had to draw the object and write a description. The task was quite challenging because we had found it difficult to locate and recognise different things.

When we completed the challenge it was time to go back to school. At school we talked about what we saw and learned.

My Heart was Pounding - By Mackenzie

My heart was pounding in my ears and I was gasping for breath when suddenly…I got saved from drowning the lifeguard asked if I was ok I said yes but I did swallow a lot of water. I decided to stay in the shallow part Moana pool. I spotted a board and the more I got closer the further it got finaly I caught it I jumped on the board and I was happy until…the waves came. The waves pushed me off the board. The board had led me to the very deep bit of the pool I tried to scream for help. I thought for a secend I put one hand up a lifeguard saw me he grabbed his stick and he pulled me out of the pool. Thankyou so much I said. Maybe I should get out now and go in the much more shallow part of Moana pool.

I met Finn at the school playground I was four and he was three. I took a look he had black hair, and blue eyes also a long rats tail down his neck. The reason we met was because my sister met his sister and they wanted a play date. I asked him if he wanted to play? He said “yes”. So we went off then we saw his friend Isaac, he asked if he could play? We didn’t want to hurt his feelings but we wanted to play by ourselves so we said yes and told him to count to ten then we ran and hid since it was all most the school fair, the crates were there so we hid behind those thinking he wouldn’t find. Us but he did so we were forced to tell him but. Then our mums called so we didn’t have to I said seeya “bye” he said. So we’ve been friends ever since.

BUDDY READING

BUDDY CLASS

Our buddy class is Room 3 and they are a junior class. Our buddies are a class that we meet up with throughout the year to share stories, teach new skills and do activities with.

Yesterday Jemma and Anika went to Room 3 to share their stories. These stories had been planned, written, checked and then published. Since the audience was our junior buddy class we presented them as a picture book because we know juniors like pictures. The pictures help with understanding what some of the words mean.

We heard Room 3 really enjoyed it. Jemma thought it was, "fun because all the juniors were just staring at me".
Anika said, "I was nervous at the start but it turned out to be alright".
