BUDDY READING

BUDDY CLASS

Our buddy class is Room 3 and they are a junior class. Our buddies are a class that we meet up with throughout the year to share stories, teach new skills and do activities with.

Yesterday Jemma and Anika went to Room 3 to share their stories. These stories had been planned, written, checked and then published. Since the audience was our junior buddy class we presented them as a picture book because we know juniors like pictures. The pictures help with understanding what some of the words mean.

We heard Room 3 really enjoyed it. Jemma thought it was, "fun because all the juniors were just staring at me".
Anika said, "I was nervous at the start but it turned out to be alright".

WHAT IS TECHNOLOGY?

OUR NEW INQUIRY UNIT

We have just begun our new inquiry unit. The first part of the inquiry cycle is - "Tuning In". When we are tuning in we are looking at:
*All of the things that we already know about a topic/subject/area.
*Finding out what we think it means.
*Find out the things that we think we know.
*Find out what we don't kno, need to know or want to know.

Our BIG IDEA for this inquiry is:
People and places impact on and are influenced by technology.

A big idea is an idea that will follow us throughout the year on our journey - it is what our unit is all about.

OUR FIRST TUNING IN DISCUSSION
Independently we all wrote down what we thought, 'Technology' was. Then we shared our ideas and found out that we all thought the same thing. After that, in groups we had to write a definition for technology.

We all listed things like: ipad, phone, ipod, lights, power, computers, TV etc... as technology.

Our definitions were all very similar and said that:
"Technology is something that is electrical or uses electricity"

Ms Kerr sat quietly and just listened to our ideas. We don't know if we are right wrong but we all think we are pretty close. After some more tuning in activities (including a museum visit) we will begin doing some finding out.

We would love to hear what YOU think technology is... please leave us some comments?

DIGITAL MIHIS

Room 15 have been working on their digital mihi. The children in Room 15 are able to say their Mihi off-by-heart and so we decided to share our mihi in a different format. For our Quadbloggers or anybody unaware of what a mihi is there is an explanation below
"Mihis are introductory speeches which take place at the beginning of a gathering after the more formal pōwhiri. Mihis are generally in te reo Māori and can be given by females and males.
The mihi establishes links with other people present. Mihis involve individuals standing to introduce themselves by sharing their whakapapa (genealogy, ancestral ties) and other relevant information. It is important for Māori to know and to share their whakapapa - to know one’s whakapapa is to know one’s identity.
A mihii can vary in length depending on the reason for the gathering, how well the individuals at the hui know each other and their links to one another.
A person will usually identify specific geographical features associated with their tribal area including their maunga (mountain), awa (river) and moana (sea). They may also identify their waka (ancestral canoe), hapū (sub tribe), iwi (tribe), marae and an eponymous ancestor. This information is considered more important than the individual’s own name which may be the last piece of information given in the mihii.
Some people include pepeha - well known set verses that describe their whakapapa links to a particular hapū or iwi."

Hey Room 15 Machines and bloggers out there,

This is your teacher adding the link to help you with your Thursday spelling task. Remember, you don't have to do this on the computer you can do it directly in your book. The computer gives you a way to do it in different formats.

You enter your own spelling words and then go through the process. Bookmark this page so you can use it every week.

Other bloggers may find this useful for their own spelling words.

LOOK, COVER, SAY, WRITE

See you tomorrow,
Ms Kerr
